Welcome to your best friend, the combat guide! This will help you get into the Red Wolf Company's combat system.
Combat is separated into phases: allied phase and enemy phase. The DM of the event will decide if the allies or enemies will go first.
During the Allied Phase, you and your teammates will have a chance to do many things. Each of your turns are separated into steps: Reaction, Action, Free Action, and Movement.
The Reaction step allows your character to react to a spell or attack that is aimed against them. You may use your stamina to dodge or block attacks or bolt spells aimed for your character or they may use magicka to resist spell effects. There are also certain spells and techniques that are labelled as a reaction which can be used during this step to dodge or reposition. Please keep in mind that you may only dodge or resist one spell or attack that is targeting you unless a spell or technique says otherwise. That means that you generally do not want to be outnumbered in a fight.
The Action step lets your character cast a spell, use a martial technique, or use a basic attack to try and damage the enemy. Spells and attacks generally do damage based on their rank:
Novice: 1 damage
Apprentice: 3 damage
Adept: 5 damage
Expert: 7 damage
Master: 9 damage
When using a basic attack with a weapon, you deal damage based on the rank of said skill. If you are an apprentice in one handed weapons, you will deal 3 damage. If you are a master, you will deal 9 damage. Also make sure to whisper the GM of your intentions before you post your action in game (send the GM a private message through Discord if the event is over Discord). This allows the GM to tell you if you hit or not. The GM will do the same before they post in the general chat. This will allow the ease of combat rp and a more speedy response from both sides. Keep in mind that everything is an action unless otherwise stated.
The Free Action is a very unique step that you may not always get to use. Activating an enchantment, applying a poison, activating a Speechcraft ability, using a potion or saying a few words during combat count as a free action. There may also be a spell or two that will allow you to do something during a free action, but this is otherwise a nuanced step.
The Movement step is exactly what is implied; your character gets to move! The base movement for every character is 30 ft, which is translated into 3 steps in game. This movement can be modified according to your character's race, equipment, spell effects, and unique modifiers.
The only step that must happen first is the Reaction step. If your character does not dodge, they will be hit by the attack or spell in its full effect.
